YouTube Kids offers a kid-friendly YouTube viewing experience.

YouTube Kids is an official app from Google that seeks to provide a kid-friendly viewing experience. There’s a lot of content on YouTube that isn’t appropriate for children, and parents can’t look over their kids’ shoulders all the time, and that makes this app a powerful parental tool.

With this app, Google aggressively filters and categorizes content. We can certainly say that it errs on the side of caution. This same filtering is applied to ads, which are shown before and during some videos in order to keep the app free.

Like the standard app, YouTube Kids has a search bar, but queries are filtered as well in order to prevent clever children from circumventing the protections. There are also channels, such as Shows, Music, Learning, and Explore. There are many different educational channels to choose from, and Google does a good job of emphasizing these over other content.

As you’d expect, YouTube Kids has excellent parental controls, and those settings are locked behind a passcode so that children can’t easily access them. The app even has a timer so that you can restrict how long your child spends watching videos. We also like that parents can flag videos, which will filter them out and alert Google that it has to take a closer look.

The only issue with YouTube Kids is that the app only supports landscape mode. Used on a phone, for instance, this make searching a pain. It’s best to stick to browsing on phones, and if your child uses the phone often, it can be worth the effort to set up favorites and subscriptions on a larger device.
